Debra Kate Tillinger, an American Museum of Natural History course scientist from New York, died unexpectedly on November 4, 2022, while surrounded by her loving family. No official has made any comments about the factor that caused her death. On Saturday, November 5, 2022, her husband made the following announcement:

“Hi, everyone. Yesterday, my beloved wife, Debra Tillinger, passed away unexpectedly. I am completely devastated by this unimaginable loss. Debra was my forever partner and meant the world to me. This loss will affect my life and our extended family in ways we can’t even begin to imagine. I know Debra touched the lives of so many of you in so many ways.

Her husband, Richard Miller, sisters Sara Tillinger Wolkenfeld (David) and Renee Tillinger Barrett (Brandon), together with six nephews and a niece, are her only surviving family members. Jane Brodwin Tillinger and Dr. Martin H. Tillinger, her parents, died before her.

Funeral services will be placed at Gutterman and Musicant Jewish Funeral Directors, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601, on Monday, November 7, 2022, at 11 a.m. The cemetery will be used for burial; its address is 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus, NJ 07652.

Dr. Tillinger received his Ph.D. in Ocean and Climate Physics from Columbia University. She was born on April 17, 1982, and has taught physics, oceanography, and courses on natural disasters at some institutions, including Marymount Manhattan College, Touro College, and the City University of New York.

She also worked for the American Red Cross as an instructor on climate change, a cause she held passionately. Debra was a dedicated teacher. She had a talent for demystifying complex ideas so her students could understand them.

She spent the last year updating the American Museum of Natural History’s online course on climate change. The system will serve as a lasting memorial to her teaching style.
