BJ Thomas (born Billy Joe Thomas) straddled the line between pop/rock and the country, achieving success in both genres in the late 60s and 70s. Early in his career, he leaned more heavily from rock & roll, but in the mid from the 70s, he became country music, becoming one of the most successful country-pop stars of the decade.
Thomas started singing while he was a child, playing in the church. In his teens, he joined the Houston base with the triumph band, which released a series of independent singles that did not get any attention. For the last of the single group, Thomas and fellow Triumph member Mark Charron wrote “Billy and Sue”, which was another fiasco. After “Billy and Sue,” Thomas began a solo career, recording a “standard” version of Hank Williams’s “I’m lonely So I could Cry” with producer Huey P. Meaux.
Released on Scepter Records in early 1966, the single became an immediate hit, catapulting to number eight on the pop charts. Although he had a series of moderate follow-up hits, including a re-release of “Billy and Sue,” Thomas failed to reintroduce the Top Ten until 1968, when “a Feeling addict” became a number five, single gold.
The following year, he scored his biggest hit with Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “Raindrops Keep Fallin ‘on My Head”, taken from the hit movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It was followed by a string of soft rock hits over the next two years, including “Everybody’s Out of Town”, “I Just Can’t Help Believing”, “No Love at All,” and “Rock and Roll Lullaby”, which featured guitarist Duane Eddy and the vocal group the flowers.

After “Rock and roll Lullaby”, Scepter Records left the company and BJ Thomas headed to Paramount Records. At Paramount, Thomas had no positive results, leading the singer to pursue a new country in the direction of pop-ABC Records. “(Don’t Be Hey You Play) Someone Else Made Someone Wrong Song”, his first single for ABC, became his second number-a record with pop charts, as well as a country establishing a vocalist career. For the next decade, he continued to have chart hits on the country, with a couple of songs – most notably “Don’t worry Baby” – move on to pop charts. During this period, he changed record companies at a rapid pace, but he did nothing to slow the pace of his hits. Thomas peak hit his country in 1983 and 1984, when he had the number one hit- “
