Jeffersontown police reported that Miguel Mena was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross Interstate 64.
Important media in the United States replicated the death of Miguel Mena, the Peruvian jockey who lost his life on October 31 after being hit by a vehicle. The athlete was considered one of the most victorious jockeys in Churchill Downs history.
According to authorities, the 34-year-old athlete was found dead on Halloween night on Interstate 64 westbound between Blankenbaker Parkway and Hurstbourne Lane around mile marker 16.
Jeffersontown police still do not know why Mena was there.
The forensic doctor who arrived at the scene determined that the Peruvian jockey died of blunt injuries sustained in the accident.
“This news is absolutely shocking, terrible, and heartbreaking (…) Our team is devastated to learn of Miguel’s death. He was such a brave rider that he struggled to overcome various challenges and adversities, ”Churchill Downs Racetrack President Mike Anderson told WLKY.
“We will miss her bright smile. Our condolences are extended to his many friends, fellow cyclists, and family, and our immediate thoughts go out to his wife April and daughters Naelah and Montserrat, ”he added.
Miguel Mena’s sports sheet details that he had 2,079 career victories, including 481 at Churchill Downs.

Peruvian jockey Miguel Mena was born in Lima on November 6, 1986, and came to the United States when he was 17 years old, where he obtained his first victory as a rider on the Calder Race Course aboard “Elian”, in 2003, under the direction of the coach George Heath.
In the fall of 2006, Mena began riding regularly at Churchill Downs.
After hearing the news of his death, the Churchill Downs page published an article highlighting that the national rider had twice won the prestigious Stephen Foster Stakes, one of the most important races in Louisville, Kentucky.
His father José was a jockey and his uncle Humberto a coach, they detailed.
