Lee Elder Died

Lee Elder, who broke down racial barriers as the first black golfer to participate in the Augusta Masters and paved the way for Tiger Woods and others to follow, has passed away. He was 87 years old.

The PGA Tour announced Elder’s death, first reported Monday by Debert Cook of the African American Golfers Digest. The cause of death was not reported, but the PGA confirmed Elder’s death with his family.

He had been in poor health and was wearing an oxygen tube under his nose when he appeared at the opening of the Masters in April. The tour said he passed away Sunday in Escondido, California.

“Lee was a good golfer, but most of all, a great man who was highly respected by a large number of people,” tweeted Jack Nicklaus. “The sport of golf has lost a hero in Lee Elder.”

Elder, a Texan who developed his game during the time of segregation while caddying and doing rounds, made history in 1975 at Augusta National, which had been an all-white tournament until he received an invitation after winning the Monsanto Open the previous year.

He failed to advance in the Masters, but he forever became a groundbreaking figure in a sport that had never been known for its racial tolerance.

Twenty-two years later, Woods became the first black golfer to get the green jacket and start one of the most successful careers in golf history.
