HOUSTON – Curley Culp, a great player in the Professional Football Hall of Fame and all-time Houston Oilers, passed away early Saturday morning, according to a statement released by his family.
Legendary nose tackle wife, Collette Bloom Culp, shared a message about her husband’s passing on her Twitter account on Saturday.
“On behalf of our family and with a broken heart, I announce the passing of my husband, Curley Culp this morning,” she wrote. “We respectfully ask for privacy at this time. ”
After an outstanding college career at Arizona State playing under coach Frank Kush, Culp was selected by the Denver Broncos with a second-round (31st overall) picked in the 1968 NFL Draft and then switched during his rookie year to Kansas City. With the Chiefs, the internal defensive striker – one of the strongest men in the NFL – has become a dominant force for the defense. In his second year at Kansas City, the Arizona native was selected for the first of his six Pro Bowl appearances. In his third year in the NFL, he played nose tackle at the top level and helped the Chiefs to a 1970 Super Bowl victory over the Minnesota Vikings.
In Culp’s first full season with the Houston Oilers, he logged 11.5 sacks and three forced fumbles and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year and First All-Pro Team in 1975.
