Colombian Actor Carlos Benjumea Dies At 80

The actor died this Thursday in Bogotá at the age of 80.

‘El Gordo’ Benjumea, one of the most beloved actors on Colombian television, died this Thursday. The news released on Twitter by different media was confirmed by Katherine Armónika, a close friend who handled her communications on different occasions.

Television, cinema, theater, radio, basically Carlos el Gordo Benjumea, 80, dedicated his life to acting and making life more bearable for Colombians through his talent and a fine sense of humor.

In the novel ‘La ley del corazón’, the actor born in Bogotá on January 27, 1941, made his last appearance on Colombian television as the lawyer Hernando Cabal.

Thus, “El Gordo”, as most Colombians called him, appeared in more than 25 national television productions, 11 films, and several plays in which his talented label was recorded forever to the delight of the public.

In an interview with EL HERALDO, about 50 years of artistic life, he recalled how he came to television.

“At the age of 16 I entered the National School of Dramatic Art, four years later I graduated from there and started my professional work, which in the beginning was very hard because imagine we were 60 crazy people who believed that this could become a profession. Currently, it is not only a profession but a very powerful industry in the country. My debut should have been in 1967, my memory is not that bad anymore, I don’t remember the name of that production, but I know it was in that year.

Ernesto Benjumea, son of the famous actor, at the time, highlighted the professionalism and at the same time fatherly love with which his father advised him.

“My dad has also been sweet to me when evaluating and commenting on my work. Specifically, we have related almost to work and this is what we have talked about the most in life (…) although there were many years in which the media related me to the name of ‘the son of fat Benjumea’, I never felt eagerness for that to change; the same time allowed me to have a career and a reputation ”.

A crack El Gordo Benjumea: a full life dedicated to making people laugh at the point of talent; a master of the art of self-mockery, reserved only for the highest spirits. Peace in his grave. Comfort to his family. pic.twitter.com/2weYmFpDQM
