His family has been cited as one of Eagar’s most significant achievements. His wife Pam, his children Matthew Eagar, Rebekah Dunkley, Linda Simpson, Karen Meeker, James Eagar, Anna Taylor, and Thomas C. Eagar, along with 29 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, are left to carry on his legacy.

Since 1976, Eagar has served as a professor at the DMSE. He enrolled in MIT as an undergraduate and graduated in 1975 with a PhD and a BS in metallurgy and materials science in 1972. then joined the DMSE faculty after serving as a research engineer at Bethlehem Steel Corp. for two years. He oversaw the division from 1995 to 2000.

After the World Trade Center in New York fell on September 11, 2001, Eagar and Christopher Musso, an MIT graduate student at the time, published a study in 2001 refuting popular theories about what caused the towers to fall, including the notion that the steel in the structures melted.

A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science was appointed to Eagar in 2002 after he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1997 for his contributions to welding theory and practice.
