Faculty members remember Professor Grant Holly as they grieve and are sad. Grant Holly, an English professor who had taught at Hobart and William Smith for the longest time, unexpectedly passed away on Tuesday, 10 November 2022.

The reason for his death is currently unknown, and funeral arrangements will also be made public; we look forward to hearing his funeral details. Everyone expresses their sorrow, grief, and condolences to the great professor’s family and friends.

“He offered wisdom, encouragement, and guidance to his colleagues, making him a beloved friend. He passed away carrying out his passion—introducing students to the wonder and fun of the film. I valued our friendship, loved our great discussions about literature, movies, and families, and respected his commitment to our students and alums. “Grant will be sorely missed,” wrote Gearan.

Further, President Mark D. Gearan informed the campus of Professor Holly’s passing and spoke about his legacy at HWS in a letter to the campus. Gearan treated each lesson and student as an opportunity to share his love of the globe with vigor and passion.

Susie Wertman, Holly’s wife, and their kids Lauren and Nick survived him. In 1992, he created the “A” Fund for his late son, Alexander Holly.

Professor Holly joined the faculty in 1970 with a position in the English Department and graduated from the University of Rochester with a doctorate in literature. He taught various subjects there, including screenwriting, literature from the eighteenth century, literary theory and psychoanalysis, and literature.

He oversaw numerous Honors programs, directed study abroad initiatives, and played a crucial role in developing the Colleges’ thriving program in Los Angeles that allows students to spend a week interacting with alums.

Professor Holly has written TV pilots, produced screenplays, and worked on rewrites for Columbia TriStar in addition to his academic career. He was a renowned scholar who published numerous papers and reviews on Swift, Pope, Blake, Austen, the novel, literary theory, and early exploration expeditions, among other authors and subjects.
