Saltburn is a black comedy psychological thriller movie directed, written, and produced by Emerald Fennell. The movie was set in Oxford and Northamptonshire, England, and starred Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Richard E. Grant, Rosamund Pike, Archie Madekwe, and Alison Oliver. The film revolves around Oxford student Oliver Quick and his engagement with his fellow University student, Felix Catton, who is a famous aristocratic student.
In the movie, the character Pamela, portrayed by Carey Mulligan, becomes the center of attention and captivates the audience due to her dark Fate, which is considered an apparent suicide associated with her past with her boyfriend. Plot of the movie
The story unfolds in the early 2000s, when a scholarship student at Oxford University, Oliver Quick, experiences difficulty fitting into the upper-class manners. Oliver got to know and befriend Felix Catton in the university, who has a rich background, and showed empathy to Quick parents’ stories of drug abuse and mental health issues. On the passing of Oliver’s father, Felix accompanies and consoles him, and later, he invites Oliver to spend the summer at his family estate, Saltburn. Oliver is infatuated with his friend Felix, which follows the multiple distressing situations in his life.
Oliver then met with Felix’s family. He stayed there with his growing obsession with the Felix family in Saltburn. One night, he was seen doing unsetting behavior with his sister Venetia. Felix’s cousin Farleigh witnesses the scene and tells Felix about Oliver’s unsetting behavior, but he denies. Later, at Saltburn, Felix’s parents, Elspeth and James, plan a party for Oliver’s birthday, where Felix surprises Oliver with his estranged mother. By seeing his Mother, he panicked. At the same time, Felix realized that he lied to him about his upbringing, Oliver’s father’s death, who is alive, and his parent’s substance abuse. Felix asked Oliver to leave the party. The next day, Felix is found dead in Saltburn’s hedge maze.
Oliver pointed out the connection between Felix’s death and Farleigh’s drug use. Oliver continues to deceive the Felix family and maintains the closeness Felix family, and when James bribes him, he accepts and leaves Saltburn. In 2022, Oliver met Felix’s mother when she was bedridden and fatally ill and admitted all his deceiving acts in Saltburn.
What happened to Pamela in Saltburn?
The Pamela character, portrayed by Carey Mulligan, is short but remains an unforgettable performance and compelling character. Carey Mulligan’s role as Pamela in Saltburn is not as prominent as it is in her film ‘Promising Young Women’; however, it marks a lasting impact. When Oliver reaches Saltburn, he meets with Felix’s mother and Elspeth’s friend Pamela, who is staying in Saltburn and hiding from his ex-boyfriend. The time period of her stay in the movie has not been told, but it seems like she has been staying there for quite a few months. Elspeth mentioned that Saltburn is always ready to welcome visitors, and they can live here as much as they can, but due to Pamela’s extended stay, Elspeth wanted her to leave. Pamela was forced to leave the house and was declared dead by apparent suicide, but it was considered that she died due to murder. The letting of Palmelo go out of Saltburn despite her risks of murder by his billionaire Russian ex-boyfriend and not caring about her death confirmed to Oliver that the Saltburn family never cared about these lost souls that they once brought. The careless and less compassionate nature of the Catton family makes Oliver’s plot robust and in action.
