According to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 450 people committed suicide every day in the year 2021. Around 1,64,033 people lost their lives due to various reasons in the entire year. This figure is 7.2 per cent higher than the previous year. The suicide rate is also the highest recorded since 1967. This is the reason why suicide has come to be called a silent epidemic. It is being highlighted as a major problem across the world.
The latest NCRB report itself shows that in the year 2021, the number of suicides in the professional or salaried category was 15,870. 50 people commit suicide every week in India due to career or workplace problems. A record 2,593 people died due to such causes in 2020. 41% more people have died due to this reason in 2021 as compared to 2020.
The top cities of India, where people are moving in search of better jobs and prospects, are also reporting the highest number of suicide cases. Of the total suicide cases reported in 2021, 35.5 per cent have been reported in 53 megacities. In many media reports, those cities have come to be called suicide hotspots. Maharashtra tops the list of states in terms of suicide.
