An Alberta woman removed from a high-priority organ transplant list for not receiving a COVID-19 vaccine has passed away.
Sheila Annette Lewis was diagnosed with a terminal illness in 2018 and was told she would not survive without an organ transplant.
She was placed on an organ waiting list in 2020, but despite having all her previous vaccinations, she was informed in 2021 that a COVID-19 vaccine was required to receive the organ transplant.
Her passing was confirmed through a social media post that stated:
“The Justice Centre is saddened to hear about the passing of a brave Canadian, Sheila Annette Lewis. Ms. Lewis stood up for freedom and bodily autonomy. Alberta Health Services (AHS), hospital and doctors took away her ability to live a long, free life,” Allie Spencer, senior communications specialist at the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), said in a statement to The Epoch Times.

“An absolute tragedy. Sheila Lewis and I had connected recently due to our similar circumstances. I didn’t know her well, but I knew she was a warrior from my conversations with her.
She fought hard to pave the way for other Canadians needing organs to receive the equitable treatment she was denied.

Canada MUST do better. These deaths are PREVENTABLE, UNNECESSARY, AND UNACCEPTABLE.”
“The Canada Health Act forbids discrimination, but Sheila Lewis was denied a transplant because of a lawful medical choice.
Her death is a tragic failure of medical ethics and the administration of justice.
I’ll work to right this wrong until the last day of my career. RIP Sheila.”
