Mutulu Shakur, the stepfather of 2Pac, reportedly died after a protracted struggle with a rare and incurable blood cancer.
Actor Kamau Franklin,72, confirmed Shakur passed away on Twitter on Friday, July 7, saying he did so late on Thursday, July 6 night.
Franklin stated, “Mutulu Shakur passed away last night.” Veteran of the New Afrikan movement, BLA member, and stepfather to Tupac Shakur. As a political prisoner of war, he spent 36 years behind bars. Gaining Power. Release everyone.
About Mutulu Shakur:
Mutulu Shakur, who has spent more than 36 years in prison and was suffering from bone cancer, was set to be freed on parole from the Federal Medical Centre close to Lexington next month.
Shakur’s medical condition, according to the U.S. Parole Commission’s Thursday night ruling, “renders you so infirm of mind and body that you are no longer physically capable of committing any Federal, State, or local crime.”
He’s planned to spend his remaining years with family in Southern California.
Blood cancer was initially discovered in Mutulu Shakur in July 2022, when he was still a prisoner. The Black Liberation Army veteran and American activist, who was 71 at the time, was given six months to live by doctors, and campaigners fought to free him from prison so he could say goodbye to his family.
Charges:
In 1981, Shakur was found guilty of criminal activity conspiracy charges for his part in the heist of a Brink’s armoured truck, which resulted in the deaths of a guard and two police officers.
He admitted guilt and showed regret before being found guilty of aiding his sister, Assata Shakur, the activist godmother of 2Pac, in escaping from jail in 1979.
Since Mutulu Shakur was imprisoned in accordance with “old law,” a set of federal sentencing standards that applied to crimes committed before to 1987, the U.S. Parole Commission has been in charge of deciding whether or not he is eligible for parole. This commission was meant to be abolished long ago.
Shakur was informed by the court that denied his request for compassionate release in 2020 that he might reapply when he was “the point of approaching death.” He was condemned more than 30 years ago by the same judge, who is now 90 years old.
