On Friday, August 25, 2023, Martin Laciga, a Swiss athlete, died unexpectedly. His death was confirmed through various social media posts.
“The former beach volleyball player passed away on Tuesday at 48. With his brother Paul, he had won many titles on sand courts worldwide. In recent months, he had become the manager of the campsite at the Tène. Swiss Volley.”
Cause of death:
His actual cause of death is unknown, but some accounts claim that he committed suicide and had his life cut short. There is no formal confirmation of his death’s cause.

About Martin Laciga:
Martin Laciga is considered a pioneer of beach volleyball in Switzerland and was one of the most successful players in Switzerland of all time.
During 18 active years, he celebrated numerous successes at the international level and helped shape beach volleyball.
As world number 1 in 1999, runner-up in the same year, three-time European champion, two-time vice-European champion, and three-time Swiss champion, with various top ten positions at the Olympic Games and as the Swiss team Athlete of the Year 1999, Martin Laciga has legendary achievements for the Swiss beach volleyball sport.
He played a crucial role in developing beach volleyball with his brother Paul. The brothers shaped the scene from 1995 to 2004. Martin Laciga also succeeded with his later partners Markus Egger, Jan Schneider, and Jefferson Bellaguarda.
Ten years ago, Laciga ended his career. As an SRF expert, he continued to accompany beach volleyball and, in this role, also travelled to the 2016 and 2021 Olympic Games.
