Mable John, Motown’s first solo female musician, passed away at age 91. She is a blues performer from the United States and was Berry Gordy’s first female signee to Motown’s Tamla label. Kevin John, her nephew, said. Kevin’s aunt, who recently provided food for the needy through her Los Angeles charity, was described as a compassionate lady by family members as someone they “liked.” Her family has not disclosed the reason for her passing.
Mertis and Lillian John welcomed R&B vocalist Mable John into the world on November 3, 1930, in Bastrop, Louisiana. John, the eldest of ten children, started singing with her siblings when she was young. Her mother played the guitar as they performed traditional gospel songs.
Her famous brother William “Little Willie” John was born in Arkansas, where John and her family first resided before moving to Michigan. When “Little Willie” John got to town, John started filling in for R&B singer Etta James as the opening act. Mable John held a secretarial position at the Friendship Mutual Insurance Company under the supervision of Berry Gordy, the mother of the company’s founder.
She eventually left her job and attended Lewis Business College for two years. She later encountered Mrs. Gordy once more and spoke to her son Berry, who was a songwriter looking for musicians to record his songs. Before 1959, Gordy started instructing her and playing the piano for John at local performances.
John became a well-liked live singer thanks to her debut song, “Who Wouldn’t Love a Man Like That,” even though it did not reach the pop charts. John decided to switch labels in 1965 and signed with Stax Records because she felt her music fit better. In the summer of 1966, John’s debut record for the Stax label, “Your Good This (Is About to End),” shot all the way to number six on the R&B charts. The following year, she released the single “Same Time, Same Place.”
