Lisa Brinkmeyer Death: Obituary, Cause Of Death, Funeral

The IGHSAU administrator and Hubbard-Radcliffe alumna, Lisa Brinkmeyer VanDeventer, died away today from brain cancer.

Zion UCC Hubbard Iowa issued a statement on social media on Friday, June 16, 2023, confirming her death:

“We give thanks to God for the life of Lisa Brinkmeyer VanDeventer who has gone to her heavenly home today.  She was loved by many, especially her Creator.  Her visitation will be on Sunday and celebration of life service on Monday at South Hardin Middle School. Please keep Lynn, Blain, Ted, Hitch and Libby in your prayers.”

Earlier this year, Lisa was recognized during the Drake-Iowa women’s game in November. South Hamilton, Roland-Story, and Webster City hosted memorial services for the late pioneer of women’s sports in Iowa.

Cause of death:

Lisa Brinkmeyer VanDeventer found she had brain cancer in April 2022, which was heartbreaking. Before their yearly volleyball match on October 4, South Hamilton and Roland-Story honored Brinkmeyer.

About Lisa Brinkmeyer:

In Iowa, Lisa Brinkmeyer made her name as a standout forward at Hubbard-Radcliffe High School (now a part of South Hardin CSD).

In 1993, the final year of 6-on-6 basketball, Brinkmeyer coached the Rebels to a state title by defeating Atlantic, Harris-Lake Park, West Central, and AHST.

From there, Brinkmeyer was persuaded to sign for the Drake Bulldogs by Lisa Bluder, top Iowa assistant Jan Jensen, and Jenni Fitzgerald, who works as Bluder’s special assistant at Iowa.

In 1995–96, Brinkmeyer was a Missouri Valley Championship squad member a player. After her playing career was over, she joined the coaching staff.

Brinkmeyer continued to strive to further the growth and acceptability of women’s athletics in Iowa after she left coaching and started working as an administrator with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. She was a caring mother to her kids and a devoted wife to her husband.
