Lars Tate, born on February 2, 1966, in Georgia, was an American football player who died, the school announced Tuesday. He was 56.
He spent three seasons in the National Football League as a running back (NFL). From 1988 to 1990, he was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Chicago Bears after playing college football for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Tate’s cause of death was not immediately known. According to close friend Traci Sims, he was diagnosed with cancer just last month and was in rapidly declining health. Tate died 32 days before Georgia’s season opener in 2022.
On September 4, 1988, Lars made his professional debut for the Buccaneers. Lars’ debut will be remembered for his 30-yard dash against the Philadelphia Eagles. Tate had been married to Kelly Edwards for three years before his death. Stephen, Lauren, and Donovan were their three children.
Tate was a multisport athlete as a child. He played Little League baseball, pitching a no-hitter in seventh grade and hitting two home runs on consecutive swings in another game. But football was his passion, and it was here that he created magic.
Tate returned to school after retiring from professional football to pursue a degree in economics. He also started a lawn service business with his brother.
