Lalitha was born on February 25, 1947, the daughter of Ananthan Nair and Bhargavi Amma on the Kadakkal floor in Ramapuram, Kayamkulam. Her real name is Maheshwariamma. Lalitha, who was very passionate about dance at a very young age, was sent by her parents to study dance. Lalitha actively participated in all the dance events of that time

Very soon she gained attention in acting. She has acted in a number of plays, including Swayamvaram, Experiences and Defects, Family, Sarasaya, and Thulabharam. She made her film debut with Koottukudumbam. The family was a play by Thoppil Bhasi. She then starred in comedy and mother roles as a heroine and co-star in KPAC Lalitha for over four decades.

In 1991, she won her first National Award for her role in Bharathan’s film Amaram. In 2000, she won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for the second time for her performance in Shantam. Everything in the film is filled with simplicity as a ‘living mother’. Lalitha once said in a simple interview that her role in the film was as if she had never lost her desire to act in a film.

Bharathan was married to KPAC Lalitha in 1978. Lalitha herself has said in interviews that their love affair and marriage were very eventful. After marrying Bharathan, Lalitha took a break from cinema. She later returned to the cinema with the film Kattamte Kilikkudu. The politics of KPAC Lalitha was to side with the CPM. The CPM had decided to field Lalitha in the 2011 elections in Vadakancherry. But was later avoided due to local opposition. But later she was appointed as the president of the Sangeetha Nataka Academy.

Lalitha was admitted to the hospital last November due to liver problems. She later returned home after spending several days in hospital. It was announced that the government will bear the medical expenses of the actress.
