On Sunday, August 13, 2023, Father James Keenan SJ, 86, of Jersey City, New Jersey, a well-respected educator and the legendary 29th president of The Xavier High School, sadly and unexpectedly passed away.
He left family, friends, and other loved ones devastated and saddened. The loss of such a remarkable individual has left us saddened and grieving. His death news was revealed through a social media post.
The circumstance that contributed to his death isn’t disclosed; his students are missing and remembers the beloved James Keenen SJ for his loving and kind personality.
Obituary:
On Thursday, August 17, from 1:30 to 5 p.m., a wake service will be held in Keenan Commons, Fernandez-Duminuco Hall, Xavier High School.
On Thursday, August 17, at 7 p.m., a prayer service with reflections will be held at the Church of St. Francis Xavier.
About Father James Keenan SJ:
Father Keenan left a lasting impression at Xavier by holding the positions of 46th headmaster (1974–1977) and 29th president (1977–1981). Father Keenan has dedicated his life to putting St. Ignatius’ teachings into practice.
He has a long connection with Xavier. His commitment to Xavier began when he moved to 16th Street 1963 as a student. As a result of Keenan’s innate capacity for reflection and his desire to find answers to life’s more profound questions, his relationships and his talks exhibit a spiritual depth.
This quality inspires others to go on their journeys of self-discovery and advancement by setting an example through his openness to embrace vulnerability and uncertainty. He was willing to embrace these attributes.
He has held many critical other positions as president of Xavier High School, McQuaid Jesuit High School, Canisius High School, Saint Peter’s Preparatory School, and the New York City Nativity Schools.
He has made a lasting impression in these jobs by ministering with compassion and love and providing constant pastoral support to everyone he meets.
