The wave of xenophobia that is unleashing in South Africa has turned into tragedy. A 43-year-old man from Zimbabwe was brutally beaten and stoned to death on Wednesday night and then his body was burned by angry mobs in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg.
Many took to the streets this week to protest the growing crime in the suburb of the metropolis, accusing the police of inaction. Some residents have blamed Zimbabweans for being the main culprits for many criminal acts, as they are undocumented. “They can’t be traced, they don’t have an ID card and their fingerprints aren’t registered in the databases. We are angry, we feel abandoned by the police. The perpetrators of these crimes are not arrested and prosecuted “.
Following citizen protests, the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, traveled to Diepsloot, promising the residents the deployment of other officers, as well as a team of investigators to resolve the pending cases. After the minister’s statements, the crowd was dispersed by officers with stun grenades and rubber bullets.
In the late evening of Wednesday, many residents, the angriest, took to the streets again, because they were not convinced of the promises of the government. They started knocking on the doors of alleged illegal migrants’ homes, asking tenants for documents.
The angry mob arrived at the home of Elvis Nyathi, a citizen of Zimbabwe, dragged him to the street, and killed him only because he was a foreigner, finally burning his body as well. His widow was spared because she immediately showed her passport
“My brother was a good man, not a criminal, he lived for the family. He had 4 children. They killed him for no reason. We don’t feel safe in this place anymore. What will become of us, ”said Godknows, a relative of Nyathi.

Not all South Africans residing in the neighborhood share feelings of Afrophobia, indeed many are convinced that foreigners are not responsible for the growing crime in Diepsloot. “It is really dangerous for everyone to live here. They arrive at night, knock on doors, ask for money, cell phones, and so on. It is about criminals, thieves, criminals. The people accuse the foreigners, the illegal immigrants, but it is not them ”, claimed a resident of the area.
After the terrible crime committed the other night, Fannie Masemola, commissioner-general of the South African police, defended herself against accusations that the situation would be out of control, declaring: “Many of our agents are on the ground and we have already arrested 24 illegal migrants”.
The xenophobic sentiment of South Africans is constantly growing, fueled by the high unemployment rate which has reached 35 percent and has even reached 66 percent among young people.
The unrest aimed at targeting workers from other African countries in South Africa resumed in mid-January. Also at the end of February hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Johannesburg under the name of “Operation Dudula”, accusing immigrants without a regular residence permit of “stealing” low-skilled jobs from South Africans, as well as accusing them of being responsible for criminal activities.
Until a few days ago, the demonstrations against foreigners took place peacefully, as the organizers themselves had banned the use of weapons. But even without guns and bullets, you die. This was demonstrated by the thirst for revenge against a non-existent enemy, a person who was trying to survive the misery as his own torturers. Nelson Mandela’s teachings and example seem forgotten.
