Who was D.J. Carey?

D.J. Carey was born on November 11, 1970, in Gowran, County Kilkenny, Ireland, in an athletic family. Several members of his family were associated with this support. His sister, Catriona Carey, was a member of the Ireland Women’s National Field Hockey team and was also part of the Kilkenny senior camogie team (female hurling team).

He played for his home team, Kilkenny County, as a left wing-forward at a senior level. He began his decorated career with Young Ireland’s club.  In 1988, at 17, he entered the club’s top adult team. He tasted his first victory in 1992 with the Kilkenny Intermediate Championship and was promoted to the top division of Kilkenny hurling.

He won medals in Kilkenny Senior Championship games as Captain in 1996 and 2002. His natural talent and honed skills won him the All-Ireland Championship on the Kilkenny minor team in 1988 and the Kilkenny under-21 team in 1990.

Carey was a forward in his team and participated in 138 National League and Championship games. His last game was in 2005. In retirement from playing, he became involved in team management and coaching.

He has trained the Young Ireland Junior Hurling team at club level. He has also served as a hurling coach at Carlow Institute of Technology. He poured his dedication into the club for 25 years and retired in 2013.
