Dean was also associated with the military. On May 27, 1941, before he turned 19 years old, he was elected to the army. He participated in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II and attended radio and coding courses in the United States and Australia. On October 22, 1945, he was dismissed by the military with honors.
