World-famous fly fisherman Dave Whitlock, who contributed to numerous articles, died Thursday night after suffering a severe stroke.
Emily confirmed the news through the Dave & Emily Whitlock Fly Fishing social media page. According to Emily, he was working on his boat next to our casting when it struck, and he was rushed to Tulsa for treatment. He eventually broke the tippet and calmly slid back into the deep water.
Friends and family who miss him express their condolences and prayers for his soul on social media:
“Another true great has left the fly fishing world: a fly tier, artist, and angler with exceptional talent. Mr. Whitlock died following a stroke yesterday, his wife reportedly wrote on Facebook. His absence will be felt deeply.
World-famous fly angler Dave Whitlock has contributed several essays, videos, and graphics to leading outdoor sports publications. Field & Stream published his first essay in 1968.
To pursue a new career as a full-time professional in fly fishing, Dave left his work as a research chemist and combined his skills in painting, drawing, writing, photography, fly fishing, fly tying, and lecturing.
He has co-authored or made significant contributions to dozens of books, including six books he has written and illustrated and which fly fishers regard as “bibles.”
The most well-known and accomplished person from Oklahoma outside of his home state is Dave, who is frequently overlooked there.
He was selected as one of Fly Fisherman Magazine’s “50 Most Influential Fly Fishers in the Last Five Decades” and has been inducted into five halls of fame.
Emily, Dave’s wife, is a skilled fly fisher and edits all of Dave’s writing. They are located in Welling, Oklahoma, close to a trout stream.
