Dante Dettamanti, a retired Stanford University water polo coach, died on Tuesday, October 25, while biking on Canada Road, according to sources who spoke to The Almanac.
So, according to Art Montiel, a spokesman for the Redwood City CHP Area, a man hit a street sweeper from the San Mateo County Public Works Department stationed on the right shoulder of the road about a half mile south of Highway 92 at about 4:05 pm on Tuesday. No information has been made public regarding his funeral plans.
Dante Dettamanti is one of the top coaches in the history of his sport after leading Stanford’s water polo team to seven NCAA championships and more than 550 victories over the past 25 years.
In 1976, Dettamani started his long-lasting coaching career at Stanford. According to USA Water Polo, he assisted the group in winning eight NCAA championships and was five times voted NCAA Coach of the Year.
Dettamanti was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame in 2002 while a student at the University of California, Davis, where he also participated in swimming and water polo.
John Vargas, a former U.S. men’s national team coach who is currently the head coach at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, a school with one of the best prep programmes in the nation, took over Dettamanti’s office on January 1, 2002. (Stanford announced Vargas’ employment on September 11, so it essentially went undetected.)
Dettamanti declared, “I’ll serve as an assistant for the national team. “I’m still participating in water polo globally, and I’ll continue to be a part of the American squad at the Olympic Games.”
According to an interview with Stanford, Dettamanti started making wine in the Santa Cruz Mountains after he retired.
