Benjamin Ward Clattenburg’s Death, NS Homeless Man Jamie Duckenfield Charged For Stabbing

Halifax Regional Police responded to the call on Monday for the altercation between two men in the 200 block of Portland Street. Upon arriving, the police found a man lying on the ground.

They identified the victim as 27-year-old Ben Clattenburg, who passed away Monday afternoon around 1:15 p.m. Reports are saying the man died in a homicide case.

Ben Clattenburg then shifted to the hospital, but later, he was declared dead. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service conducted an autopsy of the victim and declared the death of Clattenburg due to homicide.

The special investigations section of the integrated criminal investigation division arrested 33-year-old Jamie Duckenfield for second-degree murder. The homeless accused man was scheduled to be in the Dartmouth provincial court on Tuesday for further investigation.

The same Dartmouth provincial court arraigned the Dukhenfield last month in the case of assaulting a 65-year-old man on 25 April 2022 who lived near a temporary shelter at Starr Park in Dartmouth. The homeless man was sentenced to be imprisoned for 200 days.

The case was heard on 5 September last month, in which Duckenfield got time served, and judges factored him in remand credit and banned him from firearms for a decade and 18 months of probation. In addition to beating a senior citizen, he also got punished for shoplifting from Sobeys and damaging the properties.

From age 5, Homeless men lived in care and relocated around various groups of homes. Since he was 17, he has lived on the streets and had a bad habit of opioids and cocaine addiction. Later, he moved to Nova Scotia. When he exited jail in September, he lived with his partner, the mother of his three-year-old child, in Eastern Passage.
