Barry Sweeney, a well-known football referee of England, officially announced dead on Sunday morning, August 06, 2023.
He passed away at the age of 61. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, reported by Chronicle Live six weeks ago.
Barry, a renowned citizen of Newcastle upon Tyne, has declared dead through a social media post; his funeral details and memorial services have not been publicly released.
All the condolences from his friends, relatives, and teammates have started pouring into his dad, who lives in Long Benton; prayers and concerns are with his family and community.
Barry became a well-known figure during the 2014 MH17 plane crash tragedy throughout Tyneside. Barry was honoured in memory of his son Liam who died in the MH17 plane tragedy.
In response to the passing of legendary referee Barry Sweeney, Rutherford AFC Lobley Hill published an emotional statement:
“Really sad news this day to learn about Barry Sweeney’s demise, the ‘rocking ref’!! Barry was a top-notch individual who was among the kindest people you could meet and had an extensive relationship with the club.”
Northumberland FA Chief Executive Andrew Rose-Cook also stated, “He was a huge admiration for many young referees, according to. He set a high standard both on and off the field. He was just a top guy and will be dearly missed.”
Barry was born and grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne. He was a licensed referee and widely known and respected among the North East’s amateur football scene.
He has developed an image of impartiality, honesty, and outstanding game knowledge because of his years of expertise and deep love for the sport.
His dedication and expertise on the field have earned him the respect of players and his fellow officials.
Every match that Barry officiates is refereed with the utmost skill and impartiality due to his appearance. The local football community adores him because of his dedication to preserving the game’s soul.
A widely recognized and regarded match official, Newcastle West End FC, wrote on Facebook, “Everyone involved with Newcastle West End FC is saddened to hear of the sad passing of Barry Sweeney.”
