American Christian minister, author, lecturer, and founder of the Institute of Basic Life Principles (IBLP), a group that advocates for extremely orthodox Christian beliefs, is William W. Gothard Jr.
Bill, born and reared in Illinois, earned a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies from Wheaton College in 1957 and a master’s degree in Christian instruction. Years later, in 2004, Gothard finished his doctoral studies at Louisiana Baptist University in Biblical studies.
His traditionalist views promote male dominance and female submission, prominent families, homeschooling, aversion to debt, and modest dress.
When Gothard was at the height of his fame in the 1970s, his Basic Youth Conflicts seminar typically drew ten thousand or more attendees for a one-week workshop in auditoriums throughout the United States and abroad. In this way, he contacted many evangelicals from the Baby Boomer generation when they were teenagers and young adults. During this time, there were seminars for pastors, doctors, and lawmakers, and one on advanced youth disputes.
He resigned from the IBLP in 2014 after 34 women accused him of sexual misconduct, some of which reportedly occurred when the victims were children. In 2016, many alleged victims filed a lawsuit against Gothard and IBLP. Due to the expiration of the statute of limitations, the action was dropped in 2018.
