Al Unser Jr Died

This 2021 we have had quite sensitive losses for the music industry, and unfortunately, it seems that the bad news will not stop arriving. We say it because this December 10 and to the surprise of many, the death of Michael Nesmith was reported at the age of 78 . His name may not sound familiar to you at first, but he is a true legend who went down in music history as the guitarist for the mythical band The Monkees .

The news of his death was confirmed by the musician’s family, who, according to NME, wrote the following: “With infinite love we announce that Michael Nesmith has died this morning at home, surrounded by his family, in peace and due to natural causes.” Monkees manager Andrew Sandoval stated that “Michael was at peace with his legacy (…) I am confident that the brilliance he embodied will resonate and offer the love and light towards which he has always moved.”

Career

Michael Nesmith was part of the original lineup of The Monkees, a group made for American television that rose to fame in 1966, in the middle of Beatlemania until their first break in 1970 with Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, and Peter Tork. Nesmith was the group’s guitarist, and also one of its main songwriters, writing songs like “The Girl I Knew Somewhere,” “Listen to the Band,” and “Mary, Mary.”

In the following years, Nesmith suddenly participated in several meetings of the band . He also played with the group First National Band – for which he is considered a precursor of country rock – and published music as a soloist. Along with his musical career, Michael is recognized for his work as a pioneer of music videos, so much so that in 1981 he was the first person to win a Grammy for a video clip thanks to “Elephant Parts.”

Michael Nesmith’s last concert was on November 14, 2021, at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles as part of The Monkees’ farewell tour. In those presentations, he shared the stage with vocalist Micky Dolenz, who sadly is now the only surviving member of the band after the deaths of drummer Davy Jones in 2012, and keyboardist Peter Tork in 2019.
