The British actor has visited Serbia several times in previous years.
At the beginning of 2020, he came to Belgrade to shoot a documentary – Boise in Belgrade.
Then he said that from the first day, he felt warmth and connection with the people in Serbia.
“I was especially touched by the fact that getting to know Belgrade and Serbia and all the torments and problems that people went through, I learned that the series ‘Mućke’ helped them as an escape from everyday life and a terrible war,” he said.
He says that people recognized him and stopped him on the street and that his stay in Serbia and then being locked up due to the coronavirus encouraged him to understand how much that country was close to his heart.
At the end of August, Challis was granted Serbian citizenship.
Through Lazar Vukovic, who is credited with the film “Boise in Belgrade”, Challis told the wepublishnews in Serbian at the time that he received citizenship on the recommendation of Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and Deputy Mayor of Belgrade.
“It’s really something special for me, I couldn’t imagine that something like that could happen, ” Challis said in a written statement for the wepublishnews in Serbian.
Reacting to the news of Challis’ death, Vukovic told the wepublishnews that he was grateful that such a legend gave him the opportunity to show what Serbia really is and what it really is like.
“By shooting the documentary, Challis fell in love with Belgrade and Serbia so much that he really made me proud to present our country, culture, and history,” he added.
What did he say about the Men?
The first episode of Mućki was broadcast in 1981, and the last in 2003.
During those few decades, Mućke gained cult status in the Balkans, where everyone knows how the sentence “next year at this time …” ends.
However, it was almost time for Mućki not to be there at all.
“The first season did not go so well,” Challis recalled in 2020 during a visit to Belgrade.
“I think it had about 6.5 million viewers. That’s a lot for today, but then you had to have at least eight or nine million to be respected – there were only three channels. ”
Due to that, there was no plan for the second season at all.
Still, the universe somehow sorted it out with the help of a strike by BBC technicians.
“Because of that, they had to replay Mućke and people liked her over time. “Before that, no one knew that our characters would really come back,” says Challis.
“I mean, we all knew it was funny, but we didn’t know the series would last that long.”
