Actor Dean Stockwell, star of the original Dune in the role of Dr. Wellington Yueh, died last Sunday (7) at 85 years of age. The news was confirmed by his advisors to Deadline, citing that the death occurred from natural causes.
Stockwell was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989 for her role in De Affair with the Mafia, opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Modine; and collected four Emmy nominations for his time in the science fiction series Quantum Leap (1989-1993), shown in Brazil as Contra Tempos.
Although he never took any of the statuettes, Stockwell had two Cannes Film Festival awards for best actor, collected early in his career, for Estranha Obsessão (1959) and Longa Jornada Noite Adentro (1962).
Stockwell was on the verge of putting acting aside in the 1980s when friend Harry Dean Stanton called him for a role in Paris, Texas (1984), which revitalized his career. From this new crop came films such as The Legend of Billie Jean (1985), Blue Velvet (1986) and Um Tira da Pesada II (1987).
He has also appeared in The Man Who Made It Rain (1997), Buffalo Warriors (2001) and Under the Rule of Evil (2004), and has appeared in series such as Star Trek: Enterprise, Stargate SG-1, JAG: Invincible Aces, and Battlestar Galactica.
Stockwell retired from acting in 2015, dedicating his last years to the fine arts. He leaves behind his wife, Joy, and two children, Austin and Sophie
