LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Weeknd and Roddy Ricch top the list of nominees for the American Music Awards this year with eight nominations each. Bad Bunny has four thanks to new sections of Latin music.
The Weeknd and Roddy Ricch will compete for the artist of the year award with Justin Bieber, Post Malone, and Taylor Swift, it was announced Monday.
Megan Thee Stallion is the next most nominated, with five mentions, including New Artist of the Year. Other contenders include Ricch, Lewis Capaldi, Doja Cat, DaBaby, and Lil Baby.
Several new categories were included this year, including rap and hip hop, and Latin music.
Bad Bunny will be measured for the award for favorite Latin male artist with J Balvin and Ozuna, and for the favorite Latin song (for “Go”) with Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin (“RITMO (Bad Boys For Life)”) and Karol G and Nicki Minaj (“Tusa”). Two of the three nominated Latin albums are by Bunny: “Las que no iban a salir” and “YHLQMDLG”; the third is “Emmanuel” by Anuel AA.
Karol G is also competing for the Favorite Latin Female Artist award, along with Rosalía and Becky G.
The ceremony will be on November 22 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on ABC.
Most of the music awards have been held without an audience present and have included outdoor performances as a precaution against the coronavirus pandemic. Many, like the BET Awards, the CMAs for Country Music, and the MTVs for Music Videos, have opted for a mix of live and pre-recorded performances.
Several of the nominees for the AMA awards were announced by Dua Lipa on “Good Morning America.”
Swift will have the opportunity to extend her streak as the most awarded artist in the history of these awards, with 29 victories.
Swift, Bieber, Lady Gaga, DaBaby, and Doja Cat also have four nominations each.
Billie Eilish, an awards favorite since she swept the last Grammy Awards, received two nominations, Favorite Alternative Rock Artist and Favorite Social Artist.
Kanye West earned a Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist. If he wins, it would be his first AMA in 12 years.
Dan + Shay received three nominations including favorite country duo or group. In this category, they compete with Florida Georgia Line and Old Dominion.
Former One Direction member Harry Styles could receive his first solo AMA for his album “Fine Lines.”
Juice WRLD, who died in December, earned a posthumous nomination for Favorite Male Rap / Hip Hop Artist.
