Finnish guitarist Alexi Laiho, who was the leader of CHILDREN OF BODOM and BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT, has died at the age of 41 due to long-term health problems.

“We are sorry for Alexi Laiho’s death!
One of the most recognized guitarists in the world, Alexi Laiho, has passed away. The musician, better known as the frontman of CHILDREN OF BODOM, died at his home in Helsinki, Finland, last week. Laiho had suffered from health problems in recent years.
According to the record company Napalm Records. Without specifying the date or a specific cause, it has simply been explained that his death was caused by the health problems that he had been carrying for years.
Alexi Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen founded CHILDREN OF BODOM in 1993, one of the most internationally acclaimed Metal groups in Finland until their last farewell concert in December 2019. Last year, Alexi Laiho founded BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT, which recorded three songs and filmed a music video, which will be released later posthumously .
Besides CHILDREN OF BODOM, Laiho was known by bands like WARMEN, SINERGY, KYLÄHULLUT, and THE LOCAL BAND . Awarded with a Metal Hammer Golden Gods and other international awards, the guitarist was also the main star, leading a group of one hundred guitarists at the Helsinki Festival in 2015 in “100 Guitars From Hel”, a huge concert piece that he composed ” .

The press release adds:
The talented guitarist and musician enjoyed being a stepfather in his family, and as an uncle and godfather. Especially during the last few years, important family ties brought a welcome balance to his life and active touring. Laiho was particularly close to his older sister, his parents, and his niece. Laiho’s sister says:
“We are all absolutely shocked and devastated. We ask for privacy and understanding during these difficult times. My little brother’s funeral will be held in private.”
Alexi Laiho will also be deeply missed by his family in Australia.
“Alexi was the most loving and magnificent husband and father. Our hearts are forever broken,” says Kelli Wright-Laiho.

For their part, his former CHILDREN OF BODOM colleagues, keyboardist Janne Wirman , drummer Jaska Raatikainen and bassist Henri “Henkka T. Blacksmith” Seppälä have also dedicated some heartfelt words to the artist:
” Over 25 years of friendship . We have lost a brother . The world has lost a phenomenal songwriter and one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Alexis’s memories and music will live on forever.
