A sad loss for Real Madrid and the world of football. This Tuesday, its current honorary president, Paco Gento, passed away at the age of 88. The merengue club has confirmed it through a statement in which they regret the loss of a sports legend, winner of six European Cups.
“Real Madrid wants to express its condolences and its love and affection to his wife Mari Luz, his children Francisco and Julio, his granddaughters Aitana and Candela, and all his relatives, colleagues, and loved ones”, writes Real Madrid in his letter.
The white team remembers him as one of the greatest and most symbolic players in its history: “The figure of Paco Gento faithfully represents all the values of Real Madrid, and has been and will continue to be a benchmark for Real Madrid and for the world of sport The madridistas and all football fans will always remember him as one of their great myths”, they add.
With Real Madrid, he played 600 games between 1953 and 1970 and scored a total of 182 goals. In addition to the historic six European Cups, twelve league titles, two Spanish Cups, and one Intercontinental Cup are added to his track record, among other achievements. The distinction of honorary president of the club was inherited from another football legend, his teammate and friend Alfredo Di Stéfano. With the Spanish National Team, he played a total of 43 games.
Gento had faced a paternity lawsuit filed by Paquita Spain against the former soccer player. Paquita’s lawyer, lawyer Fernando Osuna, had full confidence in the decision. “We are going to win because there is enough evidence to show that Gento is the biological father of my client,” he assured me last November.
They already won in the first instance, but the family of the legendary left-winger of Real Madrid who died this Tuesday appealed and the death of the footballer has come before the resolution of the process.
Paquita’s son, David, confirmed to us that they hoped to legally bear the Gento surname. “My grandfather’s children offered us money to withdraw the lawsuit, but we decided to continue in search of the truth and to restore the honor of my grandmother, who was Paco Gento’s girlfriend for more than five years,” stressed the grandson of the Deceased former Cantabrian player.
So far the official cause of death of the soccer player is unknown.
