A veteran of American motorsport, he competed in the biggest motor sport event for the first time in 1965, winning the editions of 1970, 1971, 1978 and 1987, and had been fighting cancer for 17 years.
The family of four-time Indianapolis 500 Miles champion Al Unser Sr confirmed this Friday the death of the former driver, aged 84. Unser, who comes from a family connected to motorsport, was battling cancer discovered in 2004 17 years ago. The legend of motor sport in the United States passed away at his home in the city of Chama, in the US state of New Mexico.

Unser was one of only four drivers in history to hold the record of four victories in the oldest race in world motorsport. Besides him, AJ Foyt, Rick Mears and the Brazilian Helio Castroneves, who won his fourth triumph at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in August of this year, are on the list.

Unser started racing in 1957, making his debut in the Indy 500 in 1965. The peak of his participation in the race was in the 1970s, when he won three of his four race victories: in 1970, when he was pole, in 1971 and 1978 The fourth and last was in 1987.
