Juan de Dios Ventura Soriano, better known as Johnny Ventura, died of a heart attack this Wednesday afternoon.

His death occurred in the emergency room of the Clínica Unión Médica del Norte, in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, where he was taken after feeling ailments. The same was confirmed by his son, Jandy Ventura.

It turned out that Ventura was in a restaurant in Santiago with the teacher Jochy Sánchez when he began to present health problems. Immediately, he was taken to the Unión Médica del Norte clinic, where he received urgent attention which could not revive him.

Ventura was the most popular merenguero of all time. Also known as the «Caballo Mayor» he innovated with his catchy rhythm accompanied by his group El Combo-Show.

He was a deputy and mayor of Santo Domingo, with Peggy Cabral as vice-president, in the period 1998-2002, nominated on both occasions by the Dominican Revolutionary Party.

At the end of March 2020, Ventura, who unsuccessfully ran for mayor of the Dominican capital in the last municipal elections, remained hospitalized for three days after testing positive for covid-19, a disease from which he recovered satisfactorily.

“It is important that all the people who have been in contact with me in recent days take prevention and isolation measures to avoid the spread,” says the statement, in which he appreciates “the expressions of affection received.”

The contagion of the artist and politician has become known a few hours after the announcement of the death of Ambassador Antonio Vargas due to heart failure last morning, and that he was admitted to the Dr. Ramón de Lara Hospital after testing positive for the coronavirus.

The artist, popularly called “El Caballo Mayor”, was a prominent Dominican merenguero who was born on March 8, 1940, in Santo Domingo . From an early age he longed to become the best architect in the country without ever imagining that the low income would prevent him from entering the university.

Later he enrolled at the Ercina Chevalier Commercial Institute, where he became a Commercial Secretary, based on typing, shorthand, accounting and filing, which allowed him to integrate into the labor market.

In this institute he had his beginnings in music, since after having participated in various cultural activities as a singer, dancer, declaimer, and entertainer, he appeared, on June 2, 1956, in the program La Voz de la Alegría was achieved first place.

During his ascent in music, Johnny Ventura took singing and music courses at the school of the Dominican Voice, in the radio and television company, where the school of announcers received the name of Héctor J. Díaz, who came out as a professional microphone.
