William Pope. L has unexpectedly passed away on 23 December 2023. The cause and circumstances of his death have not yet been disclosed to the general public at the time of publication. The news of his death was announced by his gallery Mitchell-Innes and Nash, in which they stated that he passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago.
Who was William Pope. L?
William Pope. L. was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1955. He was noticeably famous for his inspiring series of ground-level crawls across New York City from the 1970s to the 2010s. He crawled in the detritus-lined streets, cladding in several outfits and equipped with the props. His decades of crawling, along with his other exceptional aspects of personality, were celebrated in several exhibitions, including a Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Public Art Fund. The final iteration of the series was a prominent part of his performance organized by the title “conquest” in 2019, due to which more than 100 New Yorkers came to join him.
His most notable contributions were his exploration into social and racial politics of water access and usage in the US. In 2017, he organized a show in Detroit with the title ‘Flint Water Crisis,’ which showed the display of the water bottling plant inside a white wall in a gallery space.
He had also worked in multidisciplinary platforms, including writing, photography, sculpture, painting, performances, and theater. His famous performance was ” the great white way: 22 Miles, 9 Years, 1 Street and Broadway New York where he was adorned as a Superman and crawled with his exceptional talent, which amazed people with his work.
