Mel Maxfield, a coach for Amarillo’s high school football team, has passed away. He tragically died suddenly on December 10, 2022, a Saturday. Amarillo High Golden Sandstrom Football announced Mel Maxfield’s passing on its Facebook page. The authorities don’t specify the reason for death.

The well-known Mel Maxfield is a football coach at Amarillo High Golden Sandstrom. He began working there in January 2010. He offered his resignation in November 2017. Just one day after Amarillo High volleyball coach Jan Barker announced her retirement after 31 years of service and ten state championships, she told her resignation, which became effective on June 30. Maxfield compiled a record of 65-29 wins and losses over his eight years at Amarillo High.
As the head football coach at AHS Burleson for more than 30 years, Maxfield achieved a record of 239-113-1, making him the most successful head football coach in the Texas Panhandle. Maxfield received the Tom Landry Award in 2016 from the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
A lot of young instructors were greatly influenced by Mel Maxfield. He did so with a buddy and a kind word from all of us who had the chance to engage with him, and he made an equally primary impression on numerous other coaches.
Coach Mel Maxfield was regarded as one of the best coaches in Texas and positively influenced many young men.
