Who Was Joseph August Zarelli? Obituary, Cause of Death, Family

The “Boy in the Box” was recognized by Philadelphia police on Thursday, 66 years after the 4-year-old boy was discovered dead inside a box in the woods. Police declared that they had established Joseph August Zarelli was the person whose body had been found on February 25, 1957, naked and severely battered, in a forested area of Philadelphia’s Fox Chase district.

After being covered in a blanket, the 4-year-old was placed inside a sizable JCPenney bassinet box. According to investigators, he had been battered to death and was gravely undernourished.

Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw stated that the crime was the oldest unsolved homicide in Philadelphia. Authorities warned that because so much time had gone, it could be challenging to bring Joseph to justice even though they hoped that making Joseph’s name known would generate fresh leads in the case.

According to Captain Jason Smith, the commanding officer of the city’s homicide team, “it’s going to be an uphill battle for us to conclusively prove who caused this child’s death.” We may decide not to make an arrest. We might never be able to identify anything. However, we’re going to make every effort to attempt.

Smith added that police have opinions about who might have killed the youngster, but they cannot discuss them while the investigation is ongoing.

Because once you determine who the child is, you start interviewing family members, “if this technology had been accessible to us 20 years earlier, it may have been an entirely different narrative. Well, many of the family members who would have been old enough to remember any incident that may have happened are typically long gone at this point in time,” Smith said.

Joseph has siblings who are still living, according to the police, even though both of his parents have passed away. Officials have stated that the family had previously resided in west Philadelphia. The parents’ names have not been made public by the police out of respect for the family.
