Who Was Alex Maguire? Obituary, Car Accident, Funeral

After a head-on incident in Madison County on Tuesday night, a 22-year-old Wood River man was declared deceased and took a second individual to an area hospital with injuries.

According to Illinois State Police, at 10:12 p.m., Wood River resident Alexander C. Maguire was driving his 2014 Nissan Versa Note northbound on Illinois 3 near New Poag Road when he collided head-on with a 2017 Hyundai Veloster.

According to a news release from the state police, Granite City resident Jeremy G. Packer, 30, driving the Hyundai, was injured and sent to the hospital. It is unknown how badly hurt he is or how he is doing now. For almost five hours, Illinois 3 was off the air.

Maguire was a skilled wrestler at Roxana High School who qualified for the state tournament three times and finished second in 2019 and third in 2018. The high school’s athletic department acknowledged the passing on its Twitter page.

We are deeply saddened to learn that Alex Maguire died in a car accident yesterday night, the statement read. “As a student-athlete at Roxana High School, he had significantly contributed. He’ll be sorely missed. Our Shell Family suffered a great loss. RIP”

He cherished athletics and wrestling the most, but he also enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends. He departs this world with his mother (Alison), father (Adam), and brother (Jacob). Funeral plans are still being finalized, and additional details will be available soon. Any donations will cover the family’s burial and medical costs, as Alex didn’t have insurance. Alex, you will always remain in our thoughts and hearts. So fly high.

The donations are gathered through a Gofundme page. The target is to raise $10,000, and as of now, USD 3,872 has been collected.
