Michigan State Police reported that on Wednesday around 7:12 p.m., Popp and other troopers investigating the suspected and impaired driver stopped in the curved lane of traffic on northbound I-75. When they were investigating, an 81-year-old motorist hit two patrol cars where Popp was standing outside his vehicle. After being hit, Popp was taken to the Hurley Medical Center; however, due to extensive injuries, he passed away at the hospital. The driver was also taken to the hospital due to severe injuries, but according to the police, he is expected to survive.
