About Tony Butler:
On May 15, 1935, he was born. Butler began his career as a journalist by working for Birmingham-area newspapers. He eventually contributed to regional and national radio shows at the BBC in the 1960s.
It was suggested that he change his native accent because his strong regional accent presented problems in the more conventional BBC setting. Butler was chosen as the first sports editor at BRMB, a brand-new, independent radio station in Birmingham in 1974.
BRMB sought to stand out from the established BBC stations by pushing Butler to speak freely on the radio and to emphasize rather than hide his accent.
Butler was a constant reminder of the need to stay true to oneself, appreciate individuality, and prioritize personal ties over all else.
His legacy highlights the importance of diversity in the media for aspiring journalists and broadcasters. Character, honesty, and a dash of local flavor are essential for making a lasting impression on the media world.
Tony Butler was presented with the esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sony Radio Academy in 2007.
Tributes:
“I am devastated to hear that my old boss Tony Butler has died. Tony gave me my job at BRMB, for which I will always be grateful. I am so glad many years later, and I got to repay him by inviting him to host the phone with me.
He revolutionized how the sport was covered on the radio and was the phone in the main.
He managed the BRMB charity football team and helped to raise thousands for needy causes.
I learned so much from him, and we became great friends- he always spoke his mind.
I had so much respect and love for and owe him so much- without him, I would not have had a radio career. RIP legend.”
