“You’ve left us with so many beautiful memories, dear friend. You got your wings tonight, just a week before your 85th birthday.
Roy Ackland, may you rest in peace. I’m sure Frank and Rich are looking forward to welcoming you to your new home.
Thank you for the incredible difference you made in my life. My prayers are for your family and all who loved you. “I am grateful for the opportunity to share an anchor desk and, more importantly, a friendship with you.”

“At 84, local television host and weather anchor Roy Ackland died. Roy retired from WGHP after nearly three decades of service. We may be competing stations on the air, but we are also people. Tonight, I’d like to express my condolences to Roy’s family and those who knew him well.”

His family moved to the United States after he was born in 1938 in London, England. Roy grew up in Nashville, TN, where he and his family were integral members of the First Baptist church. A graduate of Hillsboro High School and then Baylor University, Roy joined the Air Force, where he gained the knowledge and love of flying and weather forecasting.

Roy has worked as a stunt rider and actor, a private airline pilot, a car salesperson, and an Alaskan fisherman, to name a few. These jobs helped him prepare for his final job as a television weatherman.

Roy got his start in television at KCEN-TV 6 in Waco, Texas. He then worked for WAFF 48 in Huntsville, Alabama, and WGHP Fox 8 in High Point, North Carolina. Roy established a family with his wife, Sandra, between Texas and North Carolina.

Roy and David created stories for the Emmy Award-winning ‘Roy’s Folks’ about the people, places, and locations that make North Carolina and the surrounding states such a beautiful and exciting place to live.
