Ray Shulman Death: Obituary, Cause Of Death, Funeral

Raymond Shulman, a Scottish musician and the youngest of three brothers who played in the progressive rock group Gentle Giant, passed away on March 30, 2023.

After a protracted illness, Raymond died away peacefully at home in London. His wife, Barbara Tanner, and brothers, Derek and Philip Shulman, survive him. In this sad time, his family wants privacy.

The officials will reveal the funeral arrangements later. Everyone expressed their sorrow and heartbreak upon learning of the passing of the talented Ray Shulman, paying tribute to him and sending their condolences.

“Ray Shulman was the bass player multi-instrumentalist whose playing and whose presence of playfully interacting with band and crowd really made Gentle Giant such a great live band. He just honestly seemed like a nice guy. Well Ray died yesterday si this is posted in honor of Ray and this incredible band that I was very fortunate to have seen many times and who were a large influence on my musical tastes.”

“Sad day for the family. We lost our friend, brother and former manager Ray Shulman.

Love and prayers to our dear sister Barbra Tanner Shulman and brother Derek Shulman.”

Portsmouth is where Shulman was born. The trumpet was the first instrument he learned to play; his father was a trumpet player in a jazz band.

He continued to study the violin and guitar. He was ready to join the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain when his brother Derek persuaded him to join Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, a band that would later become Gentle Giants.

Ray was brilliant in many ways, such a compassionate and giving man. He was a fantastic tech guru, musician, songwriter, music producer, and a genuine artist who desired to remain unnoticed and allow the corpus of his work to speak for him instead of promoting himself. He continued to develop musicians like Ian McCulloch, The Sundays, and The Sugarcubes, among many others.

His expertise in music and technology has recently been focused on authoring and remixing work by other artists. The entire music industry will greatly miss him.
