The saxophonist and John Coltrane’s last great partner died in Los Angeles. He was a jazz legend.
Pharoah Sanders, the legendary American jazz saxophonist, has died at the age of 81. The news was confirmed by the artist’s label, Luaka Bop, on Twitter.
“We are devastated to let you know that Pharoah Sanders is dead,” reads the label’s Twitter statement, which also notes that the artist died “in peace and surrounded by the affection of his family and friends in Los Angeles. this morning”. The message then adds: “The most beautiful human being always and forever. Rest in peace”.

Born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1940, he began his career in Oakland, California. After moving to New York in the 1960s, he began collaborating with Sun Ra, who gave him the name Pharoah, before becoming a member of John Coltrane’s band. He was one of his last great partners: in fact, Pharoah Sanders played until his death with Coltrane in 1967. Sanders was a key element of spiritual jazz. “Karma”, a 1969 album, incorporated elements of Afro and Oriental music. It is considered one of the first records that tried to connect the two streams: pure avant-garde.

Since the 1990s his studio production has slowed dramatically, but Pharoah Sanders continued to tour and collaborate with many artists until the mid-2010s.
