On Wednesday, June 8, 2022, a reference in Portuguese art, Paula Rego, passed away. She died at her London home, alongside her children. At 87, she was a symbol of figurative and committed painting.

Born in Lisbon, Paula Rego has lived most of her life in London where she left to study at the Slade School of Art aged 17. In her heart and in her art, Portugal, where she returned regularly, remained very present. She has established herself as a very influential and recognized artist, in particular by numerous prizes and in particular in Great Britain. In 2004 she was awarded the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Sant’Iago da Espada and later Queen Elizabeth II presented her with the Medal of Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2010.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has expressed his desire that part of Paula Rego’s artistic heritage remains in Portugal. Through private and public funds, the presidency will work on the conservation of the artist’s work in his country of origin.

Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa has announced a day of national mourning in honor of the woman who represented Portuguese art internationally. The date will be set in the coming days when the date of the artist’s funeral will be known.

Between July and October 2021, the Tate Modern, an emblematic museum in London, presented the largest retrospective of the artist’s work . A beautiful tribute to Paula Rego.
