On Friday, July 14, 2023, Nikki Ducheneaux, a partner with Big Fire Law & Policy Group LLP and a native of Washington, D.C., was declared deceased, leaving everyone in shock and profound sadness.
Big Fire Law & Policy Group LLP officially announced his passing via a social media post.
While Nikki’s loved ones are curious about the circumstances surrounding her passing, the family and authorities have not disclosed the cause of his death or the incidents that led to it. However, they may do so in the future.
The family has not yet decided on the specifics of the funeral services or other arrangements, but once they do, they will release a statement.
Everyone is already mourning the loss of the amazing in-person Nikki, remembering her, paying tribute to her, and expressing sympathy.
About Nikki Ducheneaux:
As a public defender representing Montanans, Nikki started her legal career there. She subsequently pursued her natural calling as a fearsome and creative lawyer representing Indian Country.
In courts all around the country, including state, tribal, and federal courts, as well as appellate courts of all stripes, including the United States Supreme Court, Nikki represented tribes and tribal institutions.
She joined Fredericks Peebles & Morgan, our previous law firm, as an associate in 2012. She advanced fast through the ranks to become a litigation partner by 2015.
Nikki was recognized in 2016 as one of the Native American 40 under 40 honorees by the National Centre for American Indian Enterprise Development.
She served as our head of litigation in 2019. She was one of the founding equity partners of Big Fire Law and Policy Group, where she developed a reputation for tenacious and impassioned lobbying.
As a founding equity partner, Nikki was committed to acting in the firm’s best interests. Beyond her career, she was also a kind and caring mother who made time for her kids and encouraged them in their interests.
Nikki was a fierce supporter, a mother, a partner, and a friend. She was renowned for tenaciously upholding her clients’ rights, but she also championed upcoming generations of Native lawyers by serving as a mentor and advisor.
Nikki cherished her work on behalf of her people and her battles with the U.S. government to uphold and defend treaty and tribal rights.
