Martin Moore, the cellarmaster at Durbanville Hills Winery, passed suddenly on Monday, May 22, 2023, and his passing shocked and devastated his family, friends, and loved ones.
Durbanville Wine Valley reported his passing in the following Facebook post:
“Martin Moore, the cellarmaster for Durbanville Hills Wine, passed away, leaving the Durbanville Wine Valley in great sorrow.”
Cause of death:
Martin Moore’s cause of death is not publicly disclosed, although the family may publicize it later, and funeral arrangements may also be made later.
About Martin Moore:
Martin’s love and skill for winemaking were evident when, at the age of just 27, he was appointed senior cellar master in charge of KWV’s white, red, fortified, and sherry cellars. He frequently emphasized the value of vineyards in producing world-class wines.
Martin Moore was connected with Durbanville Hills from the start, and their first vintage was in 1999. He was a beloved member of the Durbanville Wine Valley and the South African wine industry.
Martin was renowned for producing excellent wines and assisting in the globalization of the Durbanville Hills brand. Martin’s expertise extended beyond winemaking; he also keenly appreciated it’s region’s terroir and inhabitants.
He was a proud parent who frequently spoke about the accomplishments of his sons. Martin has an incredible sense of humor, charisma, and passion for wine and food.

Martin has devoted many years to judging at the SA Young Wine Show and Veritas, bringing his excellent judging skills to both competitions. He often acted as Convenor of panels and served with great enthusiasm on all occasions.
His passion for wine and positive attitude will always be remembered, and we salute him as a true wine legend.
