Louise Fletcher Death
Actress Louise Fletcher, best known for playing sadistic nurse Mildred Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, died Friday at the age of 88. Her family confirmed the news to Deadline, the cause was not revealed but a family member said she passed away while sleeping at home surrounded by relatives.
Born on July 22, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama, Louise Fletcher began her career on such television episodes as Lawman, Bat Masterson, Maverick, and 77 Sunset Strip.
Her most emblematic character was that of Nurse Ratched in Trapped with No Exit; a performance that gave him an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe Award.
Her role in Ratched won her an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe for best actress. Her other notable film roles include The Exorcist II – The Heretic (1977), Flames of Vengeance (1984), Garden of the Forgotten (1987), Risk Contract (1996) and Cruel Intentions (1999).
Fletcher was also famous for appearing in series like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Bajoran religious leader Kai Winn Adami, as well as receiving Emmy Award nominations for her roles in Picket Fences (1996) and Joan of Arcadia (2004). She also played the role of Rosie in the Netflix series Girlboss (2017).
Based on the 1962 book One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the nurse became one of the biggest movie villains in Milos Forman’s film. In 2020, Netflix released the spin-off Ratched -played by Sarah Paulson- which takes place years before the events of the 1975 film.
