The United Arab Emirates (UAE) begins a 40-day period of mourning after the death of its President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan; Until now, the causes of the death of the 73-year-old president are not public.
The Ministry of Presidential Affairs, through the official WAM agency, was the one who reported the death of the president of the United Arab Emirates, later the news was confirmed by an official government statement.
However, years ago the emir of Abu Dhabi handed over the leadership of the country to his stepbrother, Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed, who is currently one of the most powerful men in the Arab world.
Sheikh bin Zayed al Nahyan had served as ruler of the most powerful emirate since 2004, but suffered a heart attack in 2014, forcing him to hand over the government to his 61-year-old half-brother Mohamed bin Zayed, also known as MBZ.
This is not the only case of these characteristics in the Arab world, as a similar example occurred in Saudi Arabia, where King Salman had to hand over power due to illness, the person in charge of assuming command was the crown prince, Mohamed Bin Salman, also known as MBS.
Zayed al Nahyan, born in Al Ain, was only the second president in the history of the United Arab Emirates, succeeding his father after the country regained its sovereignty from the British. MBZ remembered him as a “brother, mentor, and teacher”, and defended him as a leader as well, according to La Vanguardia.
Public and private establishments will remain closed for three days as a sign of mourning. So far, the details of the funeral and who will represent the kingdom of Spain are also unknown, because the emeritus king, Juan Carlos I, has lived for years in Abu Dhabi, the richest of the seven emirates that make up this State of the Persian Gulf.
