Who is Karine Jean-Pierre?

Karine Jean-Pierre will make history by replacing Jen Psaki as press secretary. Born in Martinique to Haitian parents, she is a longtime collaborator of Biden and worked with Vice President Harris. US President Joe Biden announced this Thursday (05/06) the name of Karine Jean -Pierre as the new White House press secretary. She will be the first black, openly LGBTQ woman to take the job.

After serving as deputy press secretary, she assumes the position of chief spokesperson for the US government, replacing Jen Psaki.

In a statement, the president praised the “experience, talent and integrity” of the new secretary, and also praised the work of Psaki, who, according to the statement, brought “decency, respect, and decorum back to the press room of the Casa White”.

Jean-Pierre will take over on May 13, following the departure of her predecessor, who is expected to be hired by US news broadcaster MSNBC.

In May of last year, Jean-Pierre became the first LGBTQ woman and second black woman in history to conduct a press conference at the White House.

She has served as a senior communications adviser at the White House since Biden’s inauguration in January 2020. She was previously a campaign consultant and later, vice president Kamala Harris’ chief of staff.

Since the administration of Barack Obama

Jean-Pierre is familiar with the new role, having stood by Psaki at several press conferences and having replaced her shortly before Biden’s four-day trip to Europe following the Russian invasion of Ukraine when Psaki tested positive for coronavirus.

The White House said she is a longtime Biden collaborator, with roles in political and communications roles in the administration and the Democratic presidential campaign, as well as when he was vice president under Barack Obama.

Prior to working on the Biden and Harris campaign, Jean-Pierre served as a political analyst for broadcasters NBC and MSNBC, and served as regional policy directors at the White House during the Obama administration, for whom she also worked during the re-election campaign.

From Martinique to the White House

Karine Jean-Pierre was born in Martinique after her parents fled Haiti. When the daughter was 5 years old, they emigrated to New York, the city where she grew up. The new White House spokeswoman has a degree in Public and International Relations from Columbia University.

She is openly lesbian and lives with her partner, CNN reporter Suzanne Malveaux, and their daughter.

After being announced in the role, Jean-Pierre said that this is a historic moment. “I understand how important this is to so many people. There are so many communities I represent,” she said. “It is an honor and a privilege to be behind this podium.”

Her appointment is another important step taken by the Biden administration on behalf of diversity in the US, following the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, 51, as a justice of the Supreme Court. She became the first black woman to hold the position of the country’s highest court in 232 years of history.
