James Bowman, an English countertenor, has passed away. His passing was confirmed on March 28, 2023. After receiving this dreadful news, everyone became heartbroken and devastated as it was made public.
His exact cause of death is not made public. The family may announce funeral practices later.
James Bowman is missed and remembered by everyone, including friends and family, who have expressed their condolences and paid tribute to him via social media.
“James Bowman, CBE, RIP. I will always be grateful to him for his wise and thoughtful advice. He had wicked humor and enjoyed singing, model railroading, and riding the QM2 with his partner Terry. “Bowman once stated to me that he believed his entire career had been devoted to convincing the public with his “serious” voice, “Be careful it doesn’t become a circus act.” To be a countertenor anyplace in this present reality is to remain on the shoulders of Alfred Deller and James Bowman.”
Iestyn Davies, one of today’s most prominent countertenors, paid tribute via Twitter, writing: Standing on the shoulders of Alfred Deller and James Bowman is to be a countertenor today anywhere in the world.
Bowman began his musical career as a boy chorister at Ely Cathedral. Later, he moved on to sing countertenor in the Christ Church and New College choirs at Oxford.
Bowman put in an audition for Benjamin Britten’s English Opera Group in 1967 while still a student. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he was given the role of Oberon, written with Alfred Deller’s voice in mind. After that, Bowman would make the role his own.
In operatic roles, he performed on the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Paris Opera, and La Scala stages. He collaborated with the most prominent conductors of his time on over 130 recordings as a recording artist.
